WIX/FAI sponsored BTCC Driver Adam Morgan – Donington
Podium and Points haul for WIX Filters Racing Morgan at Donington Park
Adam Morgan and his WIX Filters Racing Team earned yet another solid point’s haul at Round 2 of the British Touring Car Championship held at the undulating, fast and twisty Donington Park. Morgan enjoyed his best qualifying of the year in his Ciceley Motorsport A Class Mercedes. On Saturday afternoon after a determined and hard fought often frantic 30 minute session, again interrupted by a red flag, Adam secured a second row 4th place spot. “The car is absolutely bang on, I was as always on the edge, but the car felt brilliant, I am a bit surprised we struggled a little bit in free practice 2, it’s cold and we couldn’t get heat into the tyres but as always the team made a few tweaks here and there after our debrief and again provided me with a brilliant qualifying package”
The team hosted over 90 guests at the venue on Sunday at the popular East Midlands venue and Adam started race 1 on the compulsory soft compound Dunlop tyre, this tyre has to be used in one of the day’s 3 races. After a good start Adam held his position for the opening 4 laps of the 16 lap encounter after setting the 3rd fastest lap of the race Adam’s tyres went ‘off’ very quickly but he still managed to stay within the top ten finishing in 9th place. “I had to really push my tyres for a good grid slot in race 2 and with the addition of my Championship ‘success ballast’ they very quickly lost all their adhesion” Adam continued “I am well happy to have secured my second row start of the weekend and my other Championship contenders can now ‘enjoy’ their stint with the soft tyre”!
Adam lined up for race 2 on the clean side of the grid and made yet another perfect start holding his position into the tight and treacherous Redgate Corner. A typical BTCC battle ensued with Adam getting involved in all sorts of on track incidents which saw him move up and down the order throughout the race. Adam took advantage of his tyres and his controlled aggressive driving secured him and his WIX Racing Team their first podium of the year bringing the Ciceley prepared Mercedes A Class home in a brilliant 3rd place. “Mega, a really good race loads of action all around the track, I have to be honest, I was getting a bit cheesed off with being the apparent target of my peers I was getting banged around all over the place, I just kept my head down and waited for my car to come to me, my engineer Paul Ridgway had a great strategy in place which we stuck to, It’s always nice to grab a podium early on in the season to repay the sponsors and the mechanics for all their efforts and hard work”.
Race 3 Adam started with 57kg of Success ballast on the car and the top ten reverse grid placed Adam on the third row in 5th. Again the new Championship rules implemented to make the racing closer and more exciting to the TV and trackside audience worked perfectly...... For them!! “I am finding the added weight a real issue it’s hampering the performance, handling and dramatically reducing our straight line speed as it’s supposed to” Adam continued “I am disappointed to finish 12th it’s more points but it’s not where we deserve to be, it’s the first time so much weight has been added to the car, we are learning all the time and already think we have found a solution to change the cars set up when weight is added. Our podium has made this another really good weekend”.
Norman Burgess Commercial and Marketing Manager. “Another very positive team performance this weekend both on and off the track. Adam is more than keeping his end of the bargain on the track and we enjoyed a brilliant weekend with our VIP guests in the hospitality. Our association with WIX Filters Racing continues to pay massive dividends we have become one of the Championships front runners every weekend, over 90 guests enjoyed the weekend with the team, Thruxton can’t come soon enough we are hoping to continue with this amazing team spirit and momentum throughout the season”.
The weekend’s points haul sees Adam joint 7th in the BTCC Drivers Championship and 2nd in the Independents Trophy only 10 points behind current Champion Colin Turkington. In the Teams Championships WIX Filters Racing are currently 1st Single car entry in 5th and 2nd in the Independents Team Trophy behind the four cars of Team BMR.
